Hi all!
My first post (yay!)

I use the command+shift+4 a lot to get screen captures...
I used to do this on Leopard (10.5.x) and the capture would get saved on the Desktop as Picture 1.png (Picture 2, 3, etc).

Now I switched to Snow Leopard (10.6), and the pictures get saved on the Desktop too, but with name as 'Screen shot 2010-05-07 at 11.49.33 AM.png' (current date/time)... As useful this might look, it's very cumbersome to have such a long name for a simple screenshot...
Yes, I could rename it but I take a lot of screenshots a day, so it is a lot of work too...

The Question:
Where/how can I set up how these picture files get saved? choose a simpler name or the 'Picture X.png' name as in Leopard (command line solutions welcome)

Please help!
Thanks a lot..
Tona

Using an Utility such as OnyX you can change the format of the screenshots and where they get saved, and their prefix but you can't get rid of the date behind it.

Terminal Approach

Disable the shadow in screenshots
defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true

Change file format (JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF, jpg2000, PDF, PICT, SGI, TGA, TIFF)
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

Change Save Path
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Documents/Screenshots/

Change Name Prefix
defaults write com.apple.screencapture name prefix

To make the new values active run this afterwards.
killall SystemUIServer

Or you can use Sharpshooter and call them what you want on the fly.
Download Sharpshooter for Mac - Rename screenshots as they are taken. MacUpdate Mac Software Downloads
