What is the best way to get both the present version and a previous version of, say, a numbers file open next to each other at the same time, so I can see which one is correct?

Be it on a time machine backups, or on your HD, just open the files, and by either resizing the windows and having them next to eachother, or using sizeup to place the windows next to eachother, compare them.
