A bit confused about the settings when using Gmail from Mail 4.2

Gmail suggests using SSL. SSL works with Gmail but not with other ISPs. Why is this?

Also the info from 'Gmail Help' says the port is 995, but I had port 993 set within Mail 4.2. Both 993 and 995 seem to work. Which one should be used?

Can someone please tell me?
QUOTE Thanks
