I have Fusion installed on my MBP. I have 4gig and have allocated 1 gig to Windows. If I close Fusion will the OS use all 4gig for Mac stuff or is it permanently attached to Windows?

That 1GB is only allocated to the virtual machine when it's running.

....but I'm guessing it dedicates one of your CPU cores to Fusion.
Now does OS X resume using both cores when Fusion is suspended, or
is it permanently allocated until you delete Fusion?

No, it does not dedicate a particular CPU core to Fusion. Fusion will use both cores and it can emulate multi-core processing on a VM, but in any instance, no particular core is allocated.

Also, no hardware settings on your virtual machine are permanent. They take effect when the VM is running and when you stop the VM, everything returns to normal.

Do keep in mind that the Genius Bar specializes in Apple products. VMWare Fusion is a product of VMWare. So, while they may have some anecdotal experience with it, it's not necessarily something they are professionally familiar with.

As a network admin, I am well versed in VMWare products and can typically answer any related questions.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!
