Hi All,

I just got a Macbook Pro. I was suggested to turn the filevault which I did yesterday. The last message I got was that the clear text home directory was being deleted.

After that the laptop has just been sitting there "thinking" (I can tell because of the cursor, similar to Window's sand clock icon).

So how long does it usually take to complete? It's been sitting there for almost 20 hours. I know the HD is around 300 GB but I wasnt expecting that long for it complete.

I dont recall interrupting the process in anyway, but I'm a little worried about it.

Did I mess something up ?

Whoever told you to turn on the filevault deserves to be going through what you are going through (unless they said firewall and not filevault).
Personally, I would suggest turning off your filevault for one and keeping it off.
Then, booting of your install disc by holding down C once you hear the startup chime, selecting language, then going to menu bar, utiliites>disk utilities>selecting Macintosh HD>erase...... and then quitting utililites and reinstalling OS X (CLEAN Install)

What 6String said, but with the caveat that now that you've started the process, you will HAVE to wait for it to finish before you can do anything (AND go through it again once you turn FV off because the home folder now has to be de-crypted again).

This is just one of the reasons I constantly tell people to stay the heck away from FileVault.

PS. Firewall isn't needed either if you are using a router or modern high-speed modem. They already have firewalls, no need for another.
