Time Machine comes to mind , as well as Carbon Copy Cloner and Superduper. I actually use Time Machine and Carbon Copy.

I would also burn iPhoto library to DVD from time to time. I do this and importing the photo's is automatic.

If you want to copy to a DVD or an external hard drive, just make sure you copy the WHOLE library, not just the pictures. Your data (faces, names, titles, etc.) is kept inthat library, but is not "attached" to the photos. So, if you copy the entire iPhoto Library you should be fine.

Like skinning a cat there are more ways than one when it comes to back ups and it sounds as though you do not have a current back up system in place. Have a read of McBies comments here and decide how much time and effort you want to spend recovering data after Fire/Theft/Mech Failure.
My system is firmly in the Superduper camp and it got me thru a 2 week period while MBP was in for a new logic board, but a HD is a more likely future failure point. Think about it.
