PrefPane Question

I discovered my Security PrefPane was missing. I used Pacifist to extract it from the install disk to the systems/library/preferencePanes folder. It's in their now. However, when I open up System Preferences, the Security button is still missing. Any ideas?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro OSX 10.5.8

How about downloading and running this - it might sort things out.

Go to user/library/preferences and drag com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the desktop and reboot. This will create a new plist.
If it is fixed, then you can trash the old plist from your desktop, if not, drag it back and replace the new one and we can go from there.

Thanks but...

I tried both these ideas out. Now I have a button called "com.apple.preference.security" under the "Personal" heading of System Preferences. Clicking on it leads to a blank page.

So thanks for the help so far but what else can I try.

Thanks again.

As per this article, have you tried logging into a different account to see if it affects that account as well? Knowing if this is a system problem or a user account problem may help narrow down the issue.

not that he needs it, but backing up what Vansmith just said, logging into or setting up a new account may help you narrow it down... and that link is very useful for this sitch.

I created an account and tested an existing one. Neither have the security button. Thanks again for your continuing help.

Would and archive and install be the next logical step, or since you've already run the combo updater, might that be just as ineffective? This is a real puzzler!

It is a puzzler, and we've had a few of these missing preference pane sitches on the forums lately, which are yet to come up with resolution.
I'd be thinking a clean install, and testing everything, before reinstalling anything.
Then if it is all running smoothly (which in theory it should), then I'd be reinstalling everything else fresh from install discs, and downloading any 3rd party apps, making sure that they are compatible with the OS, and not adversely effecting the OS behind the scenes (such as corrupting system preferences).
And then just restoring music, pics, videos, photos, documents, etc from external backup.

Had missing BT pref pane that was solved with a SMC reset.

Don't think that will do it for the Security pane, but shouldn't hurt anything either.

Curiosity: Do you have File Vault turned on and how much free space do you have?
