I wouldn't worry about support as Microsoft will have to maintain it much longer than they would have with other Windows versions since it was the mainstream release for so long. 64-bit isn't necessary unless you need support for 4GB of RAM or more. 7 will more than likely become the Windows platform. But I read MS understands a lot of XP users (and businesses) will stay with XP as long as they can. But I'm sure either one will serve any Windows need one might have.
