I have a MacBook and need to reinstall the OS X startup disk to change the admin information because I have forgotten the password. Of course, I no longer have the startup disk.

My husband, however, has the startup disk for his older iBook G4, which recently went kapoot, but which is also Mac OS X. Can I use this? Or, if not, what can I do to solve this?

Thank you in advance.

Re install from your Back Up copy?? Bet u assume your HD will never fail but Hubbies G4 did. Might be time to review your backing up scene. And no the G4 is PPC and MacBook Intel so they are different animals.
This is the disc u need;

Thank you for the advice about backing up. Like I said, I do not have the install disk, or any. If I did, I would not be here asking this question.

Do you have any advice relevant to my question?

Guys, I appreciate the feedback but I am as close to computer illiterate as it gets when it comes to the systems aspects. Can someone just tell me how to do this? I do not have the disk. The only disk I have is the one for the iBook, like I said. I just need to know if this is possible.
Thank you again.

Yep, the disk will not work, so your best bet is to buy a retail copy or order a replacement disk for your machine from Apple.

No, you can't. The discs are tailored to the machines they were sold with. In this case, the disc is PPC only and won't work on your Intel-powered MacBook.

Contact Apple spare parts and order a set of replacement discs. They should run you around $40. You could also check eBay, but you need to make sure that the discs you get are for your particular model and revision.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

It has to be specific to your model and revision.

Thank you. I am sorry for the double post. After I posted the original, I saw the notice about how this was for hardware only and to post any OS X questions in the other area.

Thanks for the info. The model is correct, unsure what the revision is?

Thank you.

Flip over the notebook and look on the bottom for some silk-screened text. It should show the model number in fine print. It might also be under the battery.

Ok can you help then?

My model number is A1181 and here is a link to the install disk I was going to buy:

Apple Mac OS X 10.4.10 Tiger dvd's Macbook Core2 Duo - eBay (item 140361449297 end time Dec-27-09 14:53:16 PST)

If not, where can i purchase the replacement disk? Can I purchase through the apple site?

Thanks again!
