I've had to reinstall OS X but in the process I now have a folder "Previous System". My Mac is not happy, doing stuff - Rainbow wheel spinning forever and then all icons & pull down menu disappear. Is this because files in this folder need to be in with the new system?

No that shouldn't cause any trouble, but it can be deleted non-the-less

Try downloading Onyx or MainMenu and running some maintenance tasks to spruce up the system

What version of OSX are you using?

and download and run combo updater - there are times where that will sort issues and make sure your Network settings are still correct.

The version is 10.5.8. But when I compare the number of files in the new system folder with "Previous folder" there are less?

It just updates the system software

Sometimes the combo updater does a refresh of the system, especially if previous updates have caused any issues

No just updating what is required. Before you did an archive and install, which places that previous system folder on the desktop, did you happen to run Repair Disk from the install DVD and see what was reported?
