External Drive (time machine) not recognized

i have a western digital drive that has been used as my time machine back up for the longest time. For some reason today I got a message saying that time machine hadn't backed up in 10 days and to check my disk. The drive is not appearing in my disk utility or on my desktop. In system profiler under the firewire tab it says

FireWire Bus
Unknown device.

I can't get the drive to show up for anything though.

After 5 X it finally decided to mount? I would advise you to check that drive with Disk Utility and not to rely on it for backing up. There's nothing worse than making a backup and not being able to restore from it because the drive is defective or corrupt.

Regards.
