iMac - How do i erase previous person?

I was given an IMAC and i cant install anything without the previous owner's password that i dont have, how do i erase that and make my own?

I have a feeling if you have the install discs that came with the computer you can reformat the imac from the discs, although I'm not certain. Otherwise find out the Admin password.

And if the password is Firmware Protection Password, send it back. You wikll know if that is what it is as you will not be able to boot up from the original or system dics.
