Hi.

I am trying to help a friend with her MacBook. It is impossble to do any software updates.
(I have never used a mac before, so I am not sure what to do. Anyway, this is what I have found out so far..)

Basically what this says is:

Quote:
An unexpected error has occurred
The installation package has been moved to trash.
If you want to try again, you should open the package in Finder

Ok, so I went to the Terminal and looked for some reports there:
(Note: although I am only trying to update this RAW software, the problem is relevant for all other updates. It is just easier to use one package as an example)
Code:
uname -v
Darwin Kernel Version 8.11.1: Wed Oct 10 18:23:28 PDT 2007; root:xnu-792.25.20~1/RELEASE_I386
Tried to install from Terminal:
Code:
sudo softwareupdate --install RAWCamera26-2.6
Password:
Software Update Tool
Copyright 2002-2005 Apple

Downloading RAW-kompatibilitetsoppdatering for digitale kameraer
Downloading RAW-kompatibilitetsoppdatering for digitale kameraer 0..20..40..60..80..100
Expanding RAW-kompatibilitetsoppdatering for digitale kameraer
Installing RAW-kompatibilitetsoppdatering for digitale kameraer 0
Package failed: Error SUSessionErrorDomain 6

Done.
Ok, so I was looking for some kind of error log in /var/log:

Code:
/var/log/system.log
Sep 22 18:52:26 Macintosh sudo: kjerstinilsen : TTY=ttyp1 ; PWD=/Library/Logs/CrashReporter ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install RAWCamera26-2.6
Sep 22 18:53:20 Macintosh kernel[0]: disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED).
Sep 22 18:53:21 Macintosh crashdump[1060]: perl crashed
Sep 22 18:53:21 Macintosh crashdump[1060]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/perl.crash.log
Sep 22 18:58:02 Macintosh sudo: kjerstinilsen : TTY=ttyp1 ; PWD=/private/var/log ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install RAWCamera26-2.6
Sep 22 18:58:56 Macintosh kernel[0]: disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED).
Sep 22 18:58:56 Macintosh crashdump[1070]: perl crashed
Sep 22 18:58:56 Macintosh crashdump[1070]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/perl.crash.log
I guess this thing about Perl crashing may be relevant. So here is a printout from perl.crash.log

From here on, I am all out of ideas. This perl log did not tell me anything i understood.

Do any of you understand any of this?
Any advice on what to try?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

My suggestion is to do a Repair Permissions and Verify Disk (not permissions) on your internal HD, via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). If the Verify Disk fails, you'll have to boot from your Install disc and use it's copy of DU to repair. Post back if you need to do this but aren't sure how.

If those succeed, disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse, and try the "update" again.

If no help, do an Archive and Install, preserving users and settings, per the Archive & Install section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine User Tip.

Then try the "update" again.

If still no luck, make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

Regards

QUOTE Thanks
