Is iLife and iWork now part of the operating system?

I am running Tiger 10.4.11. I got my imac about two years ago now. If I remember correctly iLife was an option that I did not get.

Was there a 10.5 Leopard upgrade that did not include iLife?

It looks to me that if I want to upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard that I have to get a boxed set that includes iLife and iWork.

Can anybody educate me?

I talked to a guy at work yesterday that said he bought a 10.5 Leopard install to upgrade an older mac he had but never used it. I was thinking I could get that and the 10.6 for $29 and be set (he is asking $50, thinks he paid $125) .

Anything I should be aware of? Thanks!

iLife comes on all new Macs, it's not optional. You're probably thinking of iWork.

Yes, the OS and iLife separate and distinct. However, new Macs automatically come with iLife so people often don't realize that it is its own separate product.

Officially, Apple suggests that you purchase the Mac Boxed Set. The reason being is that Snow Leopard is intended as an upgrade for Leopard users. The nice thing is, you get completely up-to-speed all at once without having to worry about compatibility between Snow Leopard and your '06 version of iLife.

According to Walt Mossberg, Apple concedes that the $29 upgrade will work with Tiger. However, I've also read elsewhere that you can not do an upgrade and must do a clean install.

I thought I read somewhere that 10.5 users with recent iLife '08 and iWork '08 will get updated to the '09 versions with the 10.6 upgrade... am I misreading things? Perhaps what I read was trying to communicate that there will be compatibility enhancements for 10.6 to the "older" '08 versions. I wish I could remember which of the many articles that I read stated this.

I guess I might have iLife and that it was iWork do not at this point.

So iWork is still optional?

And I could save myself having to pay the $50 to my friend to get 10.5 then get 10.6 for $29? I'm not rich and anything would help.

My co-worker is bringing it with him today. If I find out that I don't need it he won't be bothered if I don't take it.

Also I am setting up a used macmini I got on CL for my 9yo son. It has 10.5, so I guess it will only need the $29 install.

I am aware that 10.6 needs an Intel processor which both these Macs do have.

edit: off to work will check back later.

Most likely, yes.

From what I've read, yes. Now, Apple's official recommendation is to purchase the Mac Boxed Set if you're a 10.4 user, but they have admitted publicly that the Snow Leopard upgrade will work as an upgrade for 10.4.

Not sure what the official license states or what other fallout may be from doing this as the OS has yet to be released (it officially releases tomorrow), but those are the facts as I understand them at this point.

I have to be honest and say that although it's always exciting to get a new OS, it's usually prudent to wait a few months to let the bugs shake out and get a feel for how well the upgrade went for early adopters. There are quite a few known issues that are already being written about. In your case, I think I would recommend holding off for the time being.

Thanks for the input and suggestions.

What I don't understand is why I can only find a "Boxed Set" as being an option for people with Tiger. Why are the providing Tiger users iWork as the only option?

Will the $29 fee increase after the 28th?

My co-worker brought the MAC OS V10.5.1 RETAIL box. So I've got that option in my possession. But I don't think it has iWork. How much did a retail box of 10.5.1 cost? He wants $60, said he paid $130 or so. Does that sound about right?

I was just heading down the 10.5 path first because it sounded like it might be a cheaper route to go since the Apple site was only offering the Boxed Set for Tiger users.

Now I am hearing differently....

The programs:

- Mac OS 10.6
- iWork 09
- iLife 09

Are separate applications (of course the OS is an OS) that happen to be bundled together in the "Mac Box Set".

iWork 09 & iLife 09, are "normally" sold separately at the Apple Store for $79 each.

If your co-worker is selling 10.5 for $60 bucks...at the moment that would be a VERY good price. But I would say hold out another 1-2 days to see how the details of the 10.6 upgrade options play out.

If you can find that again, please post it. I'd like to see it.
I haven't seen anything yet to indicate an "included" upgrade to iLife '09 from '08 version.
As mentioned before, iLife comes with new machines but is technically not part of the OS... soooo to me, that sounds like the upgrade disc of SL would not include an upgrade to iLife '09 (or iWork '09). I doubt it, but only time (less than 24 hrs for most of us) will tell. *tick tock*

Thanks for the input on the price of what he is offering me. Yes, I can wait a bit. I just ordered today the Family Pack of 10.6. So I have a few days till I can get that, probably the first part of Sept. since they are saying now it is a 3 to 5 day wait for shipping because the response has been more than expected.

But as far as iLife. Would that mean that the 10.4.11 mac system I have would have a very old version of iLife even after an install of 10.6? I don't seen any mention of a new iLife on the 10.5 retail box that I got from my friend this morning. How does iLife work out for people with 10.4 going to 10.6? Again my iMac is a 10.4 and the Mac Mini is a 10.5 system. So I'll assume that the 10.5 Mac Mini has a 10.5 version of iLife, since all new Macs are shipped with the most recent version of iLife, correct? What version of iLife ships with 10.6?

At one time I believe iLife was bundled as part of the software that came with a newly purchased Macintosh...I don't remember if iWork ever came included with a new Mac.

As things stand now...iLife & iWork are not programs that you get for free...you have to purchase them separately if you want them.

The 10.6 "Mac Box Set" bundle (10.6, iWork, iLife)...is something new. To the best of my knowledge they have not been bundled like this before. So your iMac with 10.4, and your Mac Mini with 10.5 may or may not have older versions of iWork or iLife.

BTW...the version numbers of iWork & iLife are not the same as the Mac OS version you have installed. iLife & iWork versions are the same as the year they were released.

So iWork 08 & iLife 08 were released in 2008. iWork 09 & iLife 09 were released in 2009. And probably the 2010 versions will do the same thing.

Hope this helps,

- Nick

iLife was and continues to be bundled with a new Mac. iWork is offered as an option at checkout time.

That's correct, if you want the most recent version(s).

The Mac Box Set was offered with Leopard when iLife '09 was first released since Leopard was a requirement for '09.

Chances are if the Mac Mini was not purchased used, it has some version of iLife on it.
