Can we have a fresh/complete install of snow leopard without os x 10.5?? I have asked 2 staff through apple.com support, they both said you can only upgrade based on 10.5, is that true?

I'll bet you'll have your answer on Friday. Right now, it's anyone's guess.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

You need to buy the full version, not the upgrade version.

If you don't have OS 10.5, and you want to upgrade to 10.6...then you need to purchase the $169 dollar "Mac Box Set" to get the full install of OS 10.6.

Some other folks are being cautious about saying this (and that's ok)...but believe me...this is the way it works!

- Nick

p.s. Don't forget...you need to have an Intel based Macintosh to use OS 10.6.

Er, no. There is an upgrade version, and a full version - and the pack including ilife and iwork.

You are welcome to call Apple and ask them - the full version (i.e. not the upgrade and not the pack) will install 10.6 from scratch, fresh.

Cite a source please.

Everything I've read to date indicates that there is The Mac Boxed set (recommended for upgraders from 10.4) and the $29 upgrade, which is indeed a full version, but marketed as an upgrade.

MacDailyNews - Apple's $29 Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard disc installs just fine on Tiger Macs

Confusion - if you have Tiger, you will need the full version - you can ONLY UPGRADE from Leopard, no earlier versions.

My source is Apple, as I quoted moments ago - call them yourself.

Again, cite a source - see link posted above. Walt Mossberg/WSJ in pretty reliable.

Just to clarify, when I ordered my copy they OFFERED me the upgrade as I am running Leopard, when I said I wanted to fresh install he sold me the copy for £29 - so not the box set.

10.4 upgrade, perhaps you need the box set, but that is not my understanding either.

I just quoted my source, again. It's Apple - what more do you want exactly?

You scoffed at pigoo's suggestion above. I posted a link that basically reinforces what he said. Aside from what you heard from a phone conversation, out of context, I was wondering if you had any evidence of your assertion.

One of many articles - Claim: Tiger-to-Snow Leopard Upgrade Directly Possible - OS X 10.4 users can save $140 on the upgrade, report says - Softpedia

I don't have a copy of Tiger to test it, but I am certain that the full version, not the box set, will install and run - a fresh install of SL does NOT require any Leopard media to be performed, so how would it know you had/have Tiger, and not Leopard?

That's my 10 cents anyway, Apple might not admit it, but I am certain the full £29 version will install on ANY intel mac.

While I was initially under the impression that you needed the box set to upgrade from Tiger (as I imagine most people here were), you don't need it. See here. That article links to Mossberg's article and a Wired article confirming that the upgrade will work on Tiger machines. Mossberg states that, "...Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140" and Wired states that, "If you’re upgrading from Tiger, Apple advises you to purchase the full Mac Box Set for $170. However, there don’t appear to be technical reasons preventing a Tiger-to-Snow Leopard upgrade. Wired.com was able to confirm that the Snow Leopard upgrade can be installed on a machine running Tiger."

Why was my phone conversation out of context? Were you listening? No, didn't think so!

I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about, we differ in opinion, like it or lump it sunshine.

And when you find out you can install the full version on any intel mac, be a man and come back here and apologise to me.
