After I had downloaded the 10.5.8 update for my iMac it went through the usual process of logging me out and installing the update. However, about 2/3 of the install process the screen of my iMac turned black. I could still hear some noise so I did not initially shut it down by holding down the power button. After 20 minutes of waiting still no sign of what was going on. I decided to then shut down my mac by holding down the power button.

After I had started up the system again the white apple screen appeared and then it restarted itself again. After this everything was back to normal and it said I had installed the 10.5.8 update.

I was wondering whether this would have any implications on my mac such as constant freezing etc.

By the way here are my system specs if it helps:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.29f1

Any help would be appreciated

Tom.

If she boots no problems but the X.5.8 may not have taken.

As a suggestion, in future download updates only and you will find this in the Downloads folder of your Home account. Drag to desktop, disconnect printers etc, everything but you k&m. Disable antivirus, if used.

Run Repair Permissions from Disk Utility, double click the download icon and let it run and reboot. Sometimes it takes up to five minutes and you hear multiple chimes. Twenty minutes is too long and you have problems.

Run Repair Permissions and connect your peripherals.

If you still have problems go to Apple's web site and download thew combo updater. This is generally a huge download as it contains everything for every model.

My Dual Core download for X.5.8 is 278MB. Combo may well be up to 800MB.

I was just worried that it wouldn't of installed properly and I would have to do a fresh install and also that this had never happened to me in the previous system updates.

But thank you, I will do this in future

My MBP did two reboots itself - no problem. My 2009 Mini rebooted twice and froze. I killed the power and did a hard reboot and everything is fine. Only other thing is the update turned the icon for my iDisk from pink to blue - like the iPhone app.

Interesting on the iDisk icon. I did not like the pink one anyway so am glad. So far no issues but 4 more Machines to update!

Anyone care to speculate whether we will get a 10.5.9 update before, during or after 10.6 release? I'll guess it's the same day so as to update the 10.5 systems for compatibility with 10.6. Bet they update Airport firmware as well.

Yes of course. Tiger went to OS X.4.11 and as Snow Leopard will be a no goer for we PowerPC folk, Leopard will go on (and on), All sorts of doom were predicted if Tiger went to X.4.10 or beyond. Was like the year 2K fiasco.
