iMac - files saved to desktop don't appear

?? -- Since a few days ago, whenever I save a file (Word, whatever) to my desktop, it doesn't appear there. I can find it by doing a "find" search and moivung it to a folder, but it's perplexing and annoying to have to do that. Any suggestions?
