This morning I was reading on the BBC website that Google was releasing a OS for netbooks.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Google to launch operating system

In the artical it says "This is the first time we have had a truly competitive OS on the market in years. This is potentially disruptive and is the first real attempt by anyone to go after Microsoft" Of course Apple are going after Microsoft, cause we are ahead of them.

I know Apple don't do netbooks, and I know we are in the minority, but they have totally forgot about us.

From what I can see Apple set the standard, and Microsoft follow.

This annoys me!!

Google Chrome OS

I think Apple can step down, Microsofts has a new opponent to contend with. Google is by far the most direct threat to Windows and IE, it's going to get pretty interesting over the next few years.

Google is planning on releasing an OS, one that has no developer or widespread hardware support and is targeted at netbook (a product Apple doesn't even produce), and just because of that Apple should throw in the towel? Yea, that sounds like a reasonable response....

They're going to have the same issue Linux has faced for years - drivers for the hundreds of thousands of pieces of hardware that are out there at this point. Along with convincing the myriad manufacturers to work on drivers for yet another OS.

They're also designing it with a single focus in mind. Use of the web, e-mail and having all your content in the "cloud". Most businesses are going to frown on just that one aspect. This is not an attempt at an OS, but an attempt at a way to get people to spend their money on storage space in the "cloud" for that monthly recurring fee. That recurring fee from their users is what they're after.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.

Kash, nice

Anyway, "In the artical it says "This is the first time we have had a truly competitive OS on the market in years. This is potentially disruptive and is the first real attempt by anyone to go after Microsoft" Of course Apple are going after Microsoft, cause we are ahead of them." ... what a load of _blank_

Aside from this being old "news", I really don't see this as being another entrant in the mainstream desktop OS market.

Clearly Netbooks are moving toward the cell-phone business model, with certain models being subsidized by mobile carriers. I think Google just wants a piece of that action. And it's easy pickings for them, as competing with Windows in that space is very easy. Windows Mobile just doesn't scale up well enough, and mainstream Windows - even Windows 7 - is way bloated and overblown for what netbooks are designed to do.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

Linux enthusiasts continue holding onto an ardent belief that in a few years Linux will suddenly see a meteoric rise in usage by the general population and will soon supplant Windows. Linux usage remains in the low single digits despite being around for many years.

I somehow doubt adding in a Google branded version of Linux is going to significantly change the status quo in regard to an increase in Linux adoption.

I look at this as just being another good choice in a market that needs more choice. This will help all MS competitors in that it may get some major manufacturers out of bed with MS for netbooks.

I do think that the netbook market will be quite different by 3Q 2010, however, and I do believe that Apple will not sit by and watch it evolve. I have an Iphone and I love it but the Iphone is not a netbook (or even close). I really don't think there are too many people asking themselves "should I get an Iphone/Ipod Touch or a netbook?". Look for Apple to come up with something and this type of device is right in their wheelhouse.

As far as MS is concerned, they've already begun their reaction to this market and Ballmer has cited Linux as a major threat. In short, this platform is on the MS radar and the past has shown us what that usually means.

While I use many many google things and apps, I would not use google os simply because I would not want my entire contents on the internet, sorry to break out the tinfoil hats but keeping a cloud safe ain't all that easy.
