Hi,

I want to upgrade my hard drive to 500GB.

Obviously, I will have to install OS X again.

How will this work when I have to register the software?
(If I have to register it, never installed OS X before, only Windows, which needs registration to activate it)

I also run Final Cut Express, which I registered on the current hdd. Same question, can I re-register it after installing on the new hdd?

Thanks in advance, CB

I can't answer the FCE question but there is no such thing as activation for OS X. Install OS X and you'll be good to go.

Why would you need to reinstall the OS?

Just use SuperDuper to backup your current drive to the new one. Then, install the new one and you're good to go. I'd suggest picking up one of these to ease the process.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

you could also use Carbon Copy Cloner.

Window does not require registration to activate that part is optional. i do this everyday at work just select " no not at this time" or whatever it says and move on to activation.

Sure it does. You can defer activation, but eventually you will need to activate in order to continue using it.

Hi,
Many thanks to you all for the informative replies.

I had not thought of simply transferring the contents of the current hdd to the new one.
Excellent suggestion(s). Thanks.

I've never done this before, so will look into the available methods and see which is most suitable for me (thanks also for the recommendations).

I have a partition on the current hdd which is running Windows (via Boot Camp). I'm assuming that this will also simply transfer onto the new hdd, too?
Hope so, as I still use Pinnacle Studio frequently.

Thanks again for your time.
Hope I can return the favour some day.
Cheers, CB

You can backup and restore the Windows partition using WinClone.

I think he was referring to registration, not activation. Registration is optional.

Ah yes, important distinction.

Hi,

Just to round off the thread.

I put the new hdd in and put on fresh install of OS X (I had so little on the old hdd it seemed pointless to clone or copy it).

Everything went very smoothly - and I am noticing a difference in performance (new hdd is 7200rpm, as opposed to 5400rpm previously)

Many thanks to all contributors.
Hope I can return the favour.
Regards, CB
