Hey, My uncle got a new macbook pro and decided to give me his old one (my first mac.... YAAAAY!!)

However, he did a clean reboot of the computer, and doesn't know what he put in for the administrator password. He also lives in northern Cali (I'm in Tennessee) so it would take him another 5 days to mail me the disc if I want to do another reboot. What can I do??

The user name is "Mac User" which I believe is the default setting? is there a default password set up on the machine?

Thanks in advance everyone. any info helps!

You'll just have to wait for the discs to come in the mail.
There isn't anything you can do until then.

Since he does not know the password, you need the DVD. All you have to do when the DVD arrives is hold down the C Key after the startup sound till it boots from the DVD, when you get to the installer, look in the top drop down menus for Reset Password. Do that and shut down and reboot and use the new password you changed it to.

As mentioned many times, the original install discs should always come with the computer and be used to perform this task. One should avoid buying or accepting a computer without these discs.

More often than not, stolen computers or computers with pirated copies of the OS installed do not have the original install discs and this should be a red flag to potential buyers.

If you are sure this is a legit computer with a legitimate OS version installed... and just someone simply forgot to send the discs, then wait for them to come in the mail.
If you don't want to wait, you could also purchase a retail version of OS X and do a clean install.

Discussion of illegal activity or steps that could possibly promote or encourage illegal activity is not permitted on these forums.
