"Empty Trash" in Finder is gray

I searched this thread but didn't find one that is similar to my problem.
After transferring a video from my camera to the Movies folder, the HD had zero KB left. I trashed the same file and I got a message saying the the file will be automatically emptied from the trash. The trash icon in the dock looked empty but the HD still had zero KB. I went to the Finder to try using the "Empty Trash" option but it is in gray, as well as the "Secure Empty Trash".
BTW, I have also restarted my MacBook but the HD still has zero KB.
I would appreciate any help to fix this. Many thanks ...
