MacBook Pro - OS X crashes...a lot. Tell me it's not serious...please.

Okay, so, like many, I'm just at a loss for what to do here. I have to make this post quick since the forces at large are working against me and are poised to shut down my comp at any random moment. Here's the story:

It all started when I was playing around with the nifty media remote that comes with the MBP. I started a slide show, but I noticed that the little audio it usually played wasn't triggering. I exited, and then reentered the slideshow feature. Without so much as a warning the screen gets these vertical checkered green bars. Well, far away they just look like green bars, upon inspection the bars are comprised of tiny green squares. The system crashes and it just freezes. I try a hard reboot, but I notice that the green bars are still there. It gets to the boot up screen with the apple and a grey curtain comes down followed by the text in several languages prompting me to restart. I do so. It happens again. I do so. It happens again. I do so... it doesn't happen. What? Suddenly my computer is running fine for a few hours. I become frantic, back up my files and do a clean reinstall of the OS (Tiger). Problem solved right? Nope. Runs good a few days, green bars come back and here I am typing this. After restarting from several crashes my MBP finally generates some error code:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A49CB): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault), registers: CR0: 0x80010033, CR2: 0x00000000, C3: 0x018ba000, CR4: 0x000006e0

[well that's the very top half at least].

I look this up but apparently it's no help because lots of things cause kernel crashes. I saw everything from faulty power cords to motherboards being replaced. Does anyone have an opinion on this? What's causing it and how can I make it stop?

I have a 15" macbook pro. It's not even two years old yet (I bought it the August before last) so it's very very heart breaking. This is completely devastating as I'm trying to move and not be engulfed in debt.

Running OS X Tiger 10.4.11
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Ran hardware check from disc. Couldn't find anything wrong. Repaired permissions and verified disk.

Thanks in advance to any kind souls. I really really really appreciate it!

Firstly, I am far from an expert but it could be the GPU. I read a couple of complains from people with problems with the bars appearing but nothing like yours.

MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues

Mac Specs: 15" MBP, 2.33 C2D, 256, 4GB, WD 320 7200, 10.6 - MB, 2.0, 2GB - 4th gen Nano - 2 iPhones - iPad
It does sound like a heat issue related to the graphics card.

Is the machine sitting on your lap, on the bed, on carpet or other item that would block the air flow out the back of your MBP?

As per the link B&O provided , if you have that nVidia 8600 in your machine, the warranty has been extended and Apple will take care of it at no charge to you. Go ahead and make an appointment with the closest Apple store or give Apple a call.

Nope, I've never had any trouble with my MBP before, and aside from this, it still doesn't have any problems. No distortions have shown up prior to these troubles either.

Thank you so much for the link and yes my comp does have that graphics card. Aw shucks.

Thank you thank you thank, you guys are the best.

Now if you excuse me, I have to make a phone call
