Can someone help me. I am having problems with my Shift key. When I try to use it it makes my screen fade out or splits to another a window. My symbols won't work either.

By symbols I mean the uppercase on the numbers, like the dollar sign, asterisk, etc.

Go to SysPrefs > Universal Access > Keyboard and make sure Sticky Keys and Slow Keys are Off.

check out your keyboard language in System preferences > International

make sure it is set to International English (assuming you are in the US)
