Can a Mac be reset/restarted to an earlier date like a PC?

I did a really dumb thing and ended up with 600 vCards on my desktop, not in a folder, and the machine is screaming in pain!

It starts up, but it is so overloaded that it is crawling along. Just moving the mouse sets the pinwheel spinning for 5 minutes or more. I cant do anything.

Can't get Time Machine to open so far. If I can get it open...can I restore to yesterday and, how do I do that?

I tried restarting with the install CD but I couldn't get it to restart and show the desktop. It kept going back to the Install dialog window.

HELP!!!!

I've done that and still the same problem.

That's why I wanted to start up from the CD but I can't see the desktop, just the install dailog.

The other available options, Disk Utility etc. didn't offer any help.

I think you can restore your system from time machine with your discs. When you get to the install screen go to utilites from the menu bar and I think there is an option restore from backup

If you have a Time Machine backup, you can install the OS from the backup in the installation settings and pick any backup date to restore from.

shameless plug for my blog

I'm doing that right now.

It says it needed 43 hours to accomplish this...I'm waiting and waiting apparently until Tuesday to see if it works!

Didn't know that I could do that, or how to do it, which is why I did this post to get a solution.

I guess it is too late now, the restore is in the works.

Deleting items in terminal can be dangerous because your using the sudo command, you could end up deleting too much.

Hopefully the restore will resolve the issue...if not I'll be back for some more advice!

Thanks all!

41 hours later and my Mac is humming along. All is well.

I restored it to the last back up which was Jan 2 and lost nothing of value

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

Was your back up on a network drive or something? Why did it take so long to restore? Mine only takes about 2 hours connected via usb.

My backup is on a 750 gig external USB drive. I'm assuming that the time it took was because of the speed of my old machine. Even with the 1.5 processor upgrade and the 2 gigs of RAM, it is not the fastest thing out there
