My friend just bought a new macbook pro can i use his cd for leopard to upgrade my comp from tiger?

i ask because i've seen on a couple other forums that people have upgraded to leopard and never had to enter a cd key/activation code or anything...

That would be illegal. Unless he purchased the version with more than one license and think you have to live in the same household.

Forget about the legal aspects, you have the bigger issue of the technical problem. Those recovery discs are model specific, so unless you have the same exact model Mac as him, then the discs won't even work on yours.
