ok, i'm a very patient guy, but now this thing is really pissing me off.

i'm running tiger, fully updated. i just had to reinstall it because it crashed on me and took adium with it. as in adium wouldnt open anymore, even if i reinstalled the program.

so i redid it. wiped the drive and started clean. now, after all the updates and everything else, i CAN NOT get finder to open up in column view. i grew up using windows, tiles sucks donkey crack and i want my files in a list.

i've checked the box in preferences to open new window in column view, and it keeps opening in tile view.

why is doing this? and better yet, is there a program thats more like windows explorer, thats free (i dont pay for software, i'm not made of money)

Double click a folder - any folder to get to the contents, on the top left are three panes showing view options - the middle one is column view, I like it too.

Sometimes a reboot can cure things like that. I hope it keeps working for you.

I noticed occasionally that some system preferences didn't stick until after a reboot in Tiger; looks like they fixed it in Leopard.

Keep an eye on that HDD.

Please don't bite the hands that help you as we have nothing to gain.

HD failure is one idea how about the exhaust fan? Maybe the TiBook is overheating because of a fan failure or clogged air in/out. Have you fully updated the OS to latest for Tiger? How about fixing permissions and cleaning caches. Perhaps moving to Leopard will help out with things.

not intending to bite the hands that help if that is how it seems.

i'm suspecting the hdd because i pulled the one from my dell (when i got this laptop it only had a 10gb) because its bigger. the notebook makes some clattering noise you can kinda feel, but its not a constant thing. the tibook does get pretty warm to the touch, but i do feel air moving through and can hear the fans kick in.

this is a fresh, like 2 day old, install. fully updated, i'm the only user so needless to say i have full permissions. not ready for leopard quite yet, at the very least not until my 1gb of ram gets here. i've got a friend tossing me a disc so i can try it and see how it runs on here. there are a couple pieces of software i would like to try in leopard, but not at the sake of overall performance.

the clogged air in/out definately isnt a problem, when i got this i had to reassemble it (had a bad screen) so i made sure it was cleaned out and used a good dose of new pidgeon crap, er...thermal paste when i put the heatsinks back on.

next paycheck.....new hdd......screw it, i aint playin around.

Have you installed the 10.4.11 combo update? Try repairing permissions after you do, but since it's such a small issue, I seriously doubt it's a physical harddrive error.

yeah i did the combo update, its been reset several times since all the updates were done, i always give full permissions on installs, etc etc.

another reason i'm suspecting the hdd is when i do something like blizzards WoW downloader (my discs are halfway across the country right now...) the install after download seems to just about freeze my computer. once it quits..bam fine.

i also noticed every once in a while i get an error on data i'm trying to move to my external, or that the blizzard downloader has saving errors, etc etc....

anyone got a cheap hdd they dont need? it dont need to be big...
