Can I use a linux disk utility to repair errors on my HDD?

Having some trouble with my Leopard Mac Pro. I'm getting Kernel Panics, according to the Tech Support guy. He suggested running disk utility but I have misplaced my Leopard Install Disc. I can order a new one for cheap, but I am wondering about an interim solution.
Can I download a linux or OSS disk checker to solve my problem? Or will that completely destroy my 10.5 Operating system?

it's a different file system than linux. I'd get a new copy of your install disk, or find the original.mike
