Hi there

Got my new Imac Desktop about two days ago and so far haven't had a lot of luck. So far Skype, The whole Mac OS and my dvd player have all "quit unexpectedly", Skype multiple times the others one each and I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Could the cd have been too hot? Is Skype unstable? Should I be worried?

Thanks in advance.

My first thought is 'bad RAM', which would be highly unusual in a new iMac. However, if you think that might be the cause, get the computer back to the place it was bought. Something might have happened to the iMac in transit. Keep us posted on developments.

Secondly, whenever you get a crash like that, you should get a prompt to report the problem to Apple. Doing so is a good idea.

****...I got them to upgrade it to 2gb ram at the shop...should I take it somewhere else instead? The Apple girl didn't want the sales assistant to do it but he said it would be fine....aaaargh!

I don't know where you're located, but I'm almost sure you have consumer protection in that the item (your iMac) is under warranty, and it must be in good working condition. If it's not - and it isn't - then you need to take it back to where you bought it (not somewhere else) and insist that the item be 'made good'. It seems to me that something has gone wrong in the RAM upgrade process.

If you don't feel confident about tackling the issue on your own, take someone adult with you for support. I don't think you'll have a problem, it is not good business for a shop to sell a brand-new but defective item.

Hey thanks for the replies guys. I took it back to the shop today and they swapped it for the next model up (with 2gb ram already in it) for a discounted price. I'm wrapped, gonna set it up when I get home
