Today my computer stopped working (wouldnt start up) and I had to archive and restore for the second time in a year. There are now only 1.6 GB of free space on my computer, probably because of the archives of pervious restores. How can I "merge" the previous archives into my current one so that I can delete all of the duplicate files and re-gain space? ?

Pretty much you just have to grab the essentials, music, photos, docs and move on. There really is know why to merge the two without knowing exactly what you are doing and with out recreating the problem you just recovered from.
