Go to utilities and make sure X11 is actually installed there and you may be able to update to v.2.1.5.

Did you actually install it? Download, double click on the .dmg file and move the folder after it opens to Utilities. Moving the .dmg file does not install.

When you installed Tiger from the install DVD did you install X11 from the options folder?

Are you running Tiger? The X11 download from Apple is for Panther and wont run on Tiger.
Install X11 from your system install disc and do the update.

Did you really check it out - appears under Utilities on normal installations and the install message you got does show XII is in fact installed.
