Playing WMV Files

I attend a university that isn't too Mac Friendly
A great majority of my academic content is recorded and placed on the university's website for our viewing pleasure, in WMV 9.2 format! Obviously, this presents a problem for my brand new macbook (which I'm loving btw).
A friend of mine was able to get said WMV files to play in safari web browser by downloading flip4mac, but for some reason, flip4mac won't work on my macbook. I'm assuming the reason has to do with his mac laptop being from a previous series.
I also installed Perian, to no avail. Jeesh!
What do you guys recommend

If nothing else works, try running the Windows version of WMP 9 under the latest version of Crossover. According to that app's discussion board in their compatibility database, it works pretty well under Crossover 7.0.
Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).
