Today for some reason, instead of closing the windows I was in, command-w has started switching me to ichat. This has never happened to me before, and started randomly. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Command W should close the current window. Maybe you changed the keyboard shortcut.

are you running any application launchers that add keyboard functionality to osx such as quicksilver. Maybe command-w got programmed to launch ichat with out your knowledge.
