Startup problems...corrupted user account?

I'm fixing someone's Power Mac G4. The system boots as far as the login screen, but can't log in. I'm guessing the user account is corrupted, in which case I'd like to know if it's possible to repair the account (or create a new one) instead of doing a complete reinstall. There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.
