When connected to a public network at school, I would like to be able to find out the connection speed, but I'm not exactly sure how to. Any suggestions?

One last push!

You can hold alt/option and click on the airport symbol on the menu bar. It should give you details of the connection and the last line says "Transmit rate 56" for me, which indicates it is a 802.11g connection. AFAIK 11 Mbps is the 802.11b connection. I don't know the default speed for 802.11n, though. I hope this helps.
