    TRYING to install Tiger 10.4
I am running a G4 Dual drive (it has system 9 also) and OS X 10.3.9. I have over 23 Gig of space available and 1.2 Gig Ram. I am trying to install 10.4 upgrade and everything goes ok during installation until the install discs reaches the "Verifying Destination Location"....Then I get an error message " There were errors installing the software" "Please try reinstalling".

OK, so I tried 4 times but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I could really use some help! My machine seems to run fine with no problems so I hope it's not my drive. Could it be a bad install disc? I got it through MegaWatts if anyone is familiar with them.

Thanks in advance for any help at all!

Does your computer have firewire ports? Tiger wont install on a computer that doesn't have a firewire port. The only way I know of to circumvent that is through XPostFacto which costs $25

Please describe the install disk - you say it's a "10.4 upgrade". See also the other post in this thread about difficulty getting from Panther to Tiger, there are suggestions there.

It is a black system update disk with a grey X on it.

-- And yes my computer has firewire ports.

I tried to run Disk Warrior since my Utilities won't repair my hard drive. I found that Utilities won't repair my disk due to an error. So upon TRYING to run Disk Warrior I can't get the DW disc to launch? Any ideas? I know that there is system 10.4.9 on the disc. Will that boot on MY system? I currently run 10.3.9. Ugh! I can't figure out how to run this Disk Warrior and I need this to run to install my Tiger upgrade....Major catch 22! Help.

If you are using DW 4.1, it takes about fifteen minutes to launch after rebooting holding down 'C'.

When Disk Warrior "rebuilds" does it delete anything? I mean in my case I don't have trouble retrieving any missing or corrupt files, I just need to repair my hard disk to a state that will allow my Tiger upgrade to install. Do you know if Disk Warrior will do this? And do I need to worry about loosing any files while "rebuilding" from DW? I never used a tool like this and am just uncertain and couldn't really tell from all the literature I've read from DW. Thanks for you help!

No use DW no problems and it lets you check any changes on rebuilding before actually rebuilding. You are using version 3.0 as DW 4 will not work on Panther?

Thanks for help! DW worked great and Tiger then installed perfectly!

It seems programs take much longer to launch now that I am on system 10.4.11. It also takes longer to start the computer up now as well. Is there something I can do about that? Perhaps get more memory? I currently have 1.25GB DDR SDRAM and 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4. Can I bump this up? And will it help? I also have about 22 GB of free space left on the drive.

Go to System Preferences>Systems>Accounts>Users>LogIn Items and make sure nothing is selected there which would slow down the boot time. Your MDD like mine will handle 2GB RAM and that 22GB free space depends on the size of the drive.

You need 10-20% of the capacity free in order for the drive to operate at its premium.

OK, The system and start up seem to be fine however programs (especially Quark 7.0) which was the real reason to move to Tiger, seems to be sluggish now. Quark 6.0 when I used to run in 10.3.9 ran pretty quick...Now it's more sluggish. I'm sure its sucking some major memory (especially with large documents). I also noticed a little slow down in PhotoShop CS as well. Would things speed up if I RAM it up!? I mean it looks like I can stick another stick in the box. Here's the configuration now:

    DIMM0/J21 - 256MB - DDR SDRAM PC2600U-25330

    DIMM1/J22 - 512MB - DDR SDRAM PC2600U-25330

    DIMM2/J23 - empty

    DIMM3/J20 - 512MB - DDR SDRAM PC2600U-25330

As I mentioned, I ran DiskWarrior prior to installing Tiger and it cleaned things up. As a reminder, I run a PowerPC G4 with 1.25 GHz and 1/25 GB DDR SDRAM....Should I stick another 512 in that empty slot? I'm guessing there's another slot if that one says empty...?? Would that help increase the speed of my programs? Oh, I also have about 26Gig of available disk space. Would it also help to run DW AGAIN?

Thanks so much for your help!

OK we do not know what model Mac you have at this stage. Can you advise the processor speed please? Up to 500MHz use PC100 memory modules, 4x512MB, 466/533 to 1GHz use PC133, 3x512MB.

For starters take the 256MB from slot one, replace with 512MB from slot four, and put 256MB in slot three.

If the machine takes the four, it may well be what is known as a mirror disk door which uses memory up to PC2700, then put 2GB in it as QXP and CS3 are pretty intensive programmes and every little will help.

It is a fair jump from 1.25GB to 2GB.
