OS 10.5 - Migration assistant dead screen MBP to ext HD

LACRESTAPTY is offline
Need to move HD contents from a dead screen MBP to and external HD on an Imac. Imac HD is full so we need to go directly to Ext. HD. Migration Assistant doesn't give me destination disk options?
