OS 10.3 - Problems upgrading to Tiger

I am having problems upgrading to the 10.4 from my old 10.3OSX. I have been getting an error on the Installer Log that states: Install failed: Target volume is damaged and cannot be repaired by the Installer.

I tried just updating the OSX, and tried the Archive and Install option. My wife and I saved all of our important files, should I try the erase and install option or is it something that still won't fix the problem.

I am also using the Tiger Installer CD's.

Have you tried using Disk Utility to verify and repair the drive?
