OS 10.4 - connecting to a dell screen

when I connect my broken screened black macbook to a dell screen using a dvi to vga adapter only the desktop image shows up. Why is this?

someone here found a solution to his problem, worth a try

upgrading os x using external screen, as mac book pro screen is broke
