Unhappy OS 10.4 - Office 2008 Help loosing files.

Hi i have purchased an imac. I have a windows laptop at work with office 2002 on it.
I purchased office 2008 for my mac so that I can work on files at work and at home.
The problem is that at some point i have done something to the file that it can not be read on the p.c. or the mac. I have not a clue what I have done all that i can say as the document does not show up as the preview of the file but as a picture of a blank file. I hope that makes sense. When I try to open the file it says that it is not recognized and needs to be opened with the program that created it. It also will not open with the p.c. either. I have E mailed 4 sets of files with no problem and I do not think I did anything to them after. All os a sudden I can not open them. I have transfered these files from the p.c. straight into my documents in the Mac I do not know if this has anything to do with it.
A;so I have renamed these folders using info to this.
Please can any body help me.
Only been a Mac user for about 4 weeks.

You might have saved them again in the new .docx format. save them in .doc format and see if that works…

I have thought of that and I have now set it preferences the old xls format.
I do not think this the problem at some point I have dragged them to the desk top and worked on them and dragged them back again later to my other file. I will not be doing this again. Also when I have worked on a document to save I have pressed cmd + save thats how I use to save in windows. I will not do this either i will click on the save button at the top. The other thing what makes me wonder about the new format of document is that once the file has gone wrong I can not open it on windows or on the Mac. It is very frustrating as I do not know what I am doing wrong. The file also shows up as xls file but it does not show up as preview just a picture of an excel doc. RA-4261-01 16-52-19.xls that is what it is showing as the file name but I can not open it.
Any help would be welcome again only been a Mac user for about 4 weeks please bare with me.
Thanks Chris.

Sounds like a corrupted xls file.

Anyway, go to the fider, find the file and ctrl/click (or two finger click) onthe file and select "open with". Select 'other application' and then find 'text edit' which will be in your application folder, or just type it in the search window in the top left.

It should open, but might look like garbage. Anyway, if it does open, resave it as <filename>.csv then open excel and import the csv, and try and sort the data from there.

If it doesn't open in text edit, then it's probably beyond recovery.

Thanks for that. It has happened on 3 sets of files that i have worked on separately in the same hour. I saved them and e mailed them and then later I could not open them.
The person I emailed them to could open them no problem.
I actually got the attachments out of my sent e mails and put those copies back into my files that the corrupt ones were in. I am using sync two folders to sync with a crucial gizmo 4gb usb drive. At one point I was using a brief case in windows to sync the p.c. with the usb. Do you think it might be a faulty usb ?

Are you opening them up directly from the email? Is it an IMAP email? It might not be fully downloaded.

Lost another folder do not know where it has gone off my usb. Purchased chronosync to sync my files with a usb which I have been using. The files I am syncing are about 750 mb in total. It took 1 hour to sync them to the usb. Tried to sync them again today and a file had gone of the usb drive. Purchased another drive today did the same sync and it took 6 min. I think my problems might of been a faulty usb. They have been corrupting on the usb and when I am syncing the mac with the usb it is corrupting the files on the mac as well. I will let you know how I go on.

Something to remember when copying or syncing a large number of files from a PC to a thumb drive or USB portable formatted to FAT or FAT-32: If the copying or syncing from the PC is done directly to the root of the thumb drive or USB drive, the root will quickly fill up and some files will be lost.

The way around that is to create folders at the root level and copy to the folders instead. BTW, this is a very common error - have had it happen to me also.

Regards.

New USB working great. Noticed on the old USB drive that when I deleted everything off it it still showed info that the usb still had things on it even though that the drive did not show any files. Must of been the usb that was faulty.
