Hiding or passwording my files

Hello All
I 've got a couple folders i want to hide or password protect. I can't seem to find anything in help or the forum except some encryption progs. I don't want anything that drastic, i just don't want my friends casually stumbling across some compromising stuff.
Any ideas

have you tried using filevault to require a password to open said folders?
or have you tried any 3rd party apps, like hide out ?
