I have had problems with os x.5.2 shutting down unexpectedly. I have microsoft office 2008 installed on it. (and nothing else other than what came on the computer) Is there any known problem with office and leopard. The problem seems to have started after using office to open existing files or downloads from emails. I am returning to mac after an absence of more than 5 years.

Have you updated Office? If not, then go to your Applications folder and find Microsoft AutoUpdate and install any updates it finds.

If that doesn't solve it, unexpected shutdowns could be indicative of a hardware problem. In which case, you'll probably want to run the hardware test that are on the restore discs.
