Hey guys,
Two things going on... I need to restore everything back to factory settings for one of two reasons... either one, I will sell the MBP or two I need to get the application support back to my ILife programs. I would like to actually just start the computer from scratch either way (as if I was just opening it from Apple for the first time).
However, I want to have all my programs back once I have restored. So, I assume I would drag everything to an external. Then restore with the discs from Apple. Then drag the programs back to my HD. Is that correct?
I am sure this has already been discussed, but I did a search for "restore" and posted in one of the threads and have had no luck. Best Buy charges $130 to do this and that is just insane for something I am sure I can do if I am instructed from one of you.
thanks for the help

You can also re-install a Time machine back-up.

You could follow this from apple . It's explained well in the instructions ... It's not hard even i can do it...

If you're using Leopard, would recommend using Time Machine and backing up your system to the external. This will take awhile.

Yes, you can drag anything you like to the external and would highly recommend this before starting an install. Documents, pictures, apps, etc.

However, applications that have their own installers will not function after dragging them back from the external.

Best and easiest bet, is to follow the instructions in the link kilted gave you and do an "Archive and Install". This should keep your settings, internet settings, apps, etc. all working as they should, only on a fresh install.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
In the Windows world, most everything folks don't understand is called a virus.

thanks guys,
i am actually selling it so i don't want anything to remain on the machine's internal HD, but i want to keep everything to put back on my next mac... that means the archive and install is unneeded right?

Just put in a new Hard Drive and used my Time Machine back-up to restore all my software and settings. Works just like before!

I haven't had to restore using Time Machine but am wondering what the steps are in case I need to. Is it a simple task?

i put a new drive in my mbp this weekend, and tried a time machine restore,

it failed miserably.

not trying to scare anyone, but it was quite a bad experience.
