time machine with internal drives

- Mac pro 2.66 quad, Ati x1900, 2 500GB drives, 6 mb ram, dual 24"dell monitors
I have my time machine set up to back to an internal extra drive. Someone told me today it is best to have it backup to an external firewire, because the internal drive is succeptible to failure if the main drive crashes.
Is this true?
I thought the reason for 4 drive bays was for back up drives.
