Print problems in OS 10.3

Just installed OS 10.3 Panther - but I still MUST boot into os 9.1 to use "Word" and "excel". (I don't want to repurchase these programs just for os X) I Get a -23 error "printer not ready" when i try to print from a word doc in OS 9.1 - BUT printer works fine when printing a Web page in Safari. Printer is new - Brother H L 1435. I also can't access the "options" panel in OS X - which allows me to select "toner save" or "duplex" printing. If anyone knows a work around I'd really appreciated it.
