iChat buddy list problem

Ok, i have had a mac for about a month, and use ichat regularly, but i have run into a problem a number of times. When ever I try to add a buddy to the list, it blinks for a few seconds and then disappears, what is going on and how do i fix it?

I can't recall that ever happening to me. Are you sure the buddy you're adding is online? Maybe it just disappears because the person if offline.

a coworker is having the same problem. i'm on line and she's in my buddy list. when she adds me, it blinks a few times (and you can even see my icon and whatever im message i'm displaying), then i dissappear.
