Partition Hard Drive

I want to partition my hard drive on my MacBook, and install Ubuntu 7.10 I think I am downloading this version ''Standard personal computer (x86 architecture, PentiumTM, CeleronTM, AthlonTM, SempronTM)''.

Also, whats a good program to partition the hard drive?

Disk Utility will do it, its in your Applications/Utilities folder

How do I use it?
I selected the hard drive, and I cant edit anything except number of partitions, I want one, and the size and name and format are all locked off.

I want to install Linux on the other partition.

You to erase the disk in order to partition it

Alright.
I got my external hard drive to get recognized on my Mac, how do I do a complete backup?

And will I need my installation discs?

I would strongly suggest using the "search" button at the top. Alot of what you want to know is found around already.
