iTunes will ask if you want to convert them when you try and add them to your library.

Open iTunes and from the menu select "Add Files" or "Add folders" Then pick where your .wma files are at. It should ask then.

Unless things have changed recently, only the Windows version of iTunes will convert (and import) wma files...

I guess you right. That's weird.

Check http://versiontracker.com/ for a WMA to MP3 converter.

I suspect that wma support is built-in to Windows and accessible to any program that wants it by way of an api, and thus Apple was easily able to add support for the format to the Windows version of iTunes. Adding support to the MacOS version would have involved a lot more programming, and possibly a licensing fee. Lets face it, far fewer of us Mac users have wma files than do Windows users; Apple doesn't have as much incentive to add support to the Mac OS version of iTunes.

There are tools out there for converting wma to other formats. ffmpegx is one but can be a little on the complicated side because of the vast number of formats it supports. xACT does conversions and may support wma (but it writes uncompressed files which would then need to be re-compressed in iTunes). Audion will also convert wma to mp3...

EasyWMA is an option, but the original request was for a free tool. $10 isn't much in my opinion, but it's not free...

...then again, I just realised that my suggestion for ffmpegx wasn't valid either since it's shareware. I'd forgotten about that because I only used it once and then forgot about it
