Went to the apple site today and noticed the attached image, also viewable at:

I have always missed the film strip view in XP. I can't figure out how the full screen image view with a film strip showing has been accomplished in osx.

i think it is a slideshow within a a piece of software i.e. iPhoto
not sure tho.

In Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, which is coming out in October,
the Finder will have a Cover Flow view, which is much like Windows XP's Filmstrip view, except it's not limited to only pictures.


For now, in Tiger, here are possible solutions:

If you select multiple pictures then open in Preview, a Preview window will open with all the pictures in the Drawer, thus allowing you to scroll through those pictures.

Additionally, you can select multiple pictures in the Finder, then right-click and select Slideshow.

Also, here are some apps that allow browsing through pictures of the same folder in a previous/next fashion:
