When I logged onto my account today I noticed this.

Due to scheduled maintenance, .Mac members might be intermittently unable to access some .Mac services from 10 AM to 12 PM PDT on 08/07/2007. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Maybe a stretch, but interesting that it is happening during the day/time of the Apple event.

Sounds like Apple is going to give it a face lift. Well, in that case I would consider buying .Mac service.

This is a guess, but I believe part of the refresh will mean a 2GB update to the iDisk.

I recently had some issues w/ my .Mac account and it bounced back/forth w/ their support ppl via e-mail--in the end, they are aware of it and to compensate me they gave me "...a free lifetime 1GB upgrade to your existing account...it will remain as long as you continue to be a .Mac member and renew each year."
