Compressor???

I was curious if anyone knows how to work Compressor? I don't know much about it, but I tried to just wing it the other day and convert an AVI video I have over to DVD. What astonishes me is the result ended up being some little file I had no idea what to do with. I thot it would be as easy as clicking convert, and it would convert it. Are there other steps I need to be taking in order to convert my avi and mp4 videos to something other than what they are?

Compressor seems like an awfully expensive program to buy if you're not sure what to do with it.

Came with Final Cut. There's always a learning curve with these professional apps....
